A first-time visit to Hortlandia…

You can follow along with Gerhard’s travel and garden adventures on his blog Succulents and More. *** This spring I finally had the opportunity to experience an event my PNW gardening friends have been raving about forever: Hortlandia, the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon’s (HPSO) annual spring plant sale. Hortlandia isn’t “just” another plant sale, it’s the Coachella of plant sales! It’s such a massive event that it’s held at the Portland EXPO Center….

You’d be 100% right to be getting excited about all the plants coming up at Hortlandia, April 20 & 21st at the Portland EXPO Center. I mean, there are going to be SO MANY GREAT PLANTS. Go on, get excited! But there are also many non-plant vendors at the sale. They sell everything from pottery, to garden art, to bee and bird houses and more. Our non-plant vendors make their items themselves as creators, so you’ll be seeing one-of-a-kind artwork where you can talk (almost always) directly to the artist who created it. HPSO’s Fall PlantFest 2018, which includes a lecture followed by a plant sale, features Kelly Dodson of Far Reaches Farm as our lecture speaker.  Kelly Dodson and his wife, Sue Milliken, are true plant geeks. Their specialty nursery, Far Reaches Farm, located in Port Townsend, WA is a mecca for gardeners. Kelly and Sue met on a seed collecting expedition to China and the rest is history.
